Business messaging & communications
Know what you need to say but struggling to put it into words? Or facing an announcement where the wording really matters?
I help businesses plan, write and improve their communications, from customer emails and website copy to company announcements and staff updates.
What I actually do
You need to tell customers your prices are going up. A senior person is leaving and somebody needs to explain it to staff. Your website makes your business sound considerably more complicated than it is.
Or you have a draft that everybody has edited, nobody particularly likes and someone needs to finish.
I help you work out what to say and write the words you need. You can bring me something to review or ask me to start from scratch.
Before writing, we establish who the message is for, what they need to understand and what you want to happen next. I then develop the wording, with agreed opportunities for your team to review it.
What you can hire me for
Customer emails and updates
Price increases, changes to a service, delays, closures or a new way of doing things.
I help explain what is changing, why it matters to the customer and what they need to do. Where useful, I also prepare answers to likely questions so your customer service team has consistent wording to work with.
The aim is to give people the information they need without burying the difficult part in three paragraphs of reassurance.
Company announcements
Leadership changes, new appointments, launches, partnerships and changes in ownership.
I can write the announcement and adapt it for the people who need to hear it. That might mean a staff email, a customer update, a website statement and talking points for managers.
We also consider the order in which people should be told. Employees finding out about a major change through somebody else’s LinkedIn post is rarely a good start.
Staff messages and internal communications
Updates from leadership, explanations of business decisions and messages that managers need to deliver to their teams.
I help make these clear, direct and considerate of the questions employees are likely to have. If something is still undecided, we work out how to explain that without creating a promise the business cannot keep.
Where HR or legal advisers are involved, I work alongside them so the communications reflect the agreed facts and process.
Website copy and business messaging
Sometimes a business has a good offer but struggles to explain it.
I help clarify what you do, who you help and why somebody should choose you. That can include homepage and service-page copy, company descriptions, founder biographies and wording for presentations.
We start with the substance: what can you actually offer, what makes it useful and what evidence supports your claims? The writing should make those answers easier to understand.
Sensitive messages and difficult explanations
You need to acknowledge a mistake, explain a decision people may dislike or respond to a concern without making the situation worse.
I help you establish what needs saying, what needs checking and how the wording may be interpreted. That can include customer responses, apologies, stakeholder emails and public statements.
If the situation needs active crisis management or press handling as well as writing, I will explain that and scope the additional support separately.
A review before you press send
You may already have a draft and simply want an experienced second opinion.
I review its clarity, tone, structure and potential reputational risks, then provide edits and explain the important changes. I look for unanswered questions, unsupported claims, unintended promises and wording that could sound very different to someone outside the business.
You can book a review as a standalone piece of work.
Why work with me?
My background is in PR, crisis communications and reputation management. I think about what happens after somebody reads the words.
Could a customer misunderstand the offer? Would an employee read this as avoiding the question? Does the announcement make a claim you will struggle to defend? What happens if a sentence is shared without the rest of the message?
That perspective is particularly useful when a communication has consequences beyond sounding polished.
I work directly with you and your team to understand the business, challenge anything unclear and develop wording you can confidently put your name to.
What you receive
We agree the outputs before work begins, so you know exactly what you are paying for.
A project might include a revised customer email, a set of website pages or a coordinated announcement with separate messages for staff and customers. For more involved work, it can also include a communications timetable, manager talking points and answers to expected questions.
You receive the agreed copy in an editable format, with review rounds and deadlines set out in advance.
How it works
Tell me what needs doing
Send a short outline of the situation, the audience and any deadline. If you already have a draft, let me know. You do not need a perfectly written brief.
We agree the work and fee
I recommend an approach and confirm what is included, what background information I need and when you can expect the work.
I write or review the material
We work through the wording and any questions that need resolving. Your team checks the facts and approves the final version before it is sent or published.
One project or regular support
You can book me for a single piece of writing, a defined project or ongoing communications support.
For regular work, we agree the priorities, expected volume and turnaround arrangements. If you only need to talk through a decision rather than commission written material, a one-hour advisory session may be more suitable.
Fees depend on the scope, complexity and deadline. You receive a quote before work begins.
Tell me what you need to say
A customer email you keep putting off. An announcement with too many people editing it. A website that no longer reflects your business.
Tell me what you are working on, who needs to read it and when you need it. I will explain how I can help and what it will cost.
